National School Counseling Week, observed from Monday, Feb. 2 through Friday, Feb. 6 this year, highlights the vital role school counselors play in supporting students' academic, social, and emotional growth. This week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and impact of school counselors who work tirelessly to guide, advocate, and empower students to reach their full potential. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of providing students with the resources, encouragement, and support they need to navigate their educational journey.
In honor of National School Counseling Week, we are spotlighting several of our school counselors and the invaluable work they do. Rebecca Whalen, a school counselor at Marshalltown High School, is one of many dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to create a positive and welcoming school environment where students feel heard, supported, and prepared for success.

What inspired you to pursue a career in school counseling?
I’ve always enjoyed working with children and young adults. I realized school counseling would allow me to support students while collaborating with them as they continue to develop their skills, confidence, and sense of direction.
How do MCSD’s programs or resources support your efforts to help students thrive?
MCSD provides strong social-emotional and behavioral supports, along with academic, career, and college exploration opportunities for all learners. Students can build social-emotional skills that benefit them in every area of life. We’re fortunate to have many community mental health partners who work with students directly in our buildings. At MHS, students can explore their interests through unique courses and programs led by dedicated teachers, and take advantage of college and career opportunities through partnerships with local businesses and the community college. It’s incredible to see all that students can accomplish before graduation.
What makes Marshalltown’s approach to counseling unique?
The district has made social-emotional and behavioral health a priority for students and families. There is an ongoing commitment to removing barriers and identifying emerging student needs, while partnering with community resources to support overall well-being.
At MHS, we take a collaborative approach that includes teachers, school resource specialists, nurses, attendance specialists, administrators, and other support staff, all focused on supporting students. Together, we evaluate student needs and work with families to put supports in place that help students engage and succeed in their learning. We are fortunate to have such a strong network of school and community resources for all learners.
What do you find most rewarding about serving students and families in MCSD?
Being part of a team that prioritizes student well-being and development so students can succeed in school and beyond is incredibly rewarding. I’m also appreciative of the opportunity to learn from students, hear their stories, and see them build resiliency as they navigate challenges.
What’s the most rewarding part of being a counselor?
Watching students grow in confidence throughout high school. High school can be challenging, and it’s rewarding to see students develop the problem-solving and self-advocacy skills they need to work through obstacles. I also enjoy running into graduates in the community and hearing about their experiences after graduation.
What does it mean to you to Embrace The Lead?
To me, “Embrace the Lead” means having the confidence to try new things, step outside of your comfort zone, work through challenges, and grow as a leader.
