The Marshalltown softball team faced off with Des Moines Roosevelt for the first time in five years.
It was not a happy reunion.
The Roughriders racked up wins of 9-0 and 13-2 in six innings on Thursday night at MHS, handing the Bobcats their sixth-straight loss.
Des Moines Roosevelt (6-2) made the most out of its seven hits in the opening game, highlighted by a pair of home runs. Rayelle Brott started the scoring with a solo home run to lead off the top of the third, and JaLeah Lee hit a two-run homer as part of the Roughriders’ five-run sixth.
Marshalltown (2-7) had just three hits, and none of the Bobcat baserunner advanced beyond second base against Roosevelt pitcher Hailey Burriola. She struck out three, walked none, and got error-free defense behind her for the complete-game victory.
Gianna Baune doubled, while Laney Danielson and Kaelyn Coleman both singled for MHS. Briley Danielson took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits, two walks and one strikeout over 5 1/3 innings.
In the second game, Bobcat sophomore pitcher Hanna Osgood held the Roughriders in check for five innings, but it all blew up in the sixth. Marshalltown trailed 4-2 before Roosevelt rattled off nine runs on four hits, one error and six walks.
Bernie Weil and Grace Bell both hit two-run singles in the inning for the Roughriders, who totaled 12 hits in the second game.
Osgood allowed nine runs — five earned — on 10 hits and three walks. Eighth-graders Brooklyn Smith and Faith Sommerlot pitched to finish off the sixth inning.
Laney Danielson scored both Bobcat runs in the nightcap, driven in by Aubree Mundt both times. Danielson walked, advanced on wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly in the second, and she doubled ahead of Mundt’s single in the fourth.
Mundt, Danielson and Kate Sandvick had the Bobcats’ only hits against Adalyn Scott, who was chased after three innings by Mundt’s RBI single. Lee tossed the final three frames for Roosevelt, allowing no hits and one walk while striking out three.
The Bobcats go back out on the road on Monday, facing Des Moines Lincoln for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
